More than 20 veterans gathered at Aldin Grange Fishery, Bearpark, for Durham Freemasons’ annual Veterans Fishing Day on August 16, 2025. Organised by the Chester-Le-Street Anglers Lodge, the event offers former service personnel a safe, welcoming space to relax, reconnect, and share experiences.
Inspired by the success of fishing days for children with special needs through the Masonic Fishing Charity, the initiative has grown into a highlight of the veterans’ calendar.
“Being here reminds me I’m not alone,” said veteran Kim Hills. “It’s not just the fishing—it’s talking to people who’ve been through similar things.”
With each cast into the water, friendships formed, and conversations flowed about life after service—about the challenges, the memories, and the resilience needed to carry on.
